Andrew Carnegie’s grave – Sleepy Hollow Cemetery: Tarrytown, NY

Sleepy Hollow has some pretty famous names buried in it, and for the most part, they’re in pretty open areas, and fairly ostentatious. But not Carnegie’s grave. Andrew Carnegie and Louise Whitfield are buried side by side hidden off the main path and in a small area surrounded by trees and brush. You would walk past it if you weren’t paying attention.

It’s amazing how humble the grave is: just a beautiful Celtic cross and a simple stone. I was moved by how simple but powerful it was. On the stone, people leave coins to honor Carnegie. Mine is the shiny penny in the top right corner. I can’t wait to go back this year, it would be cool if it was still there. Not that I would know which penny was mine at that point but it’s nice to think about it.
